The Breeders Cup was formed in 1982 by John R. Gaines and consists of fourteen top class horse races raced annually at different racecourses each year. When the Breeders Cup was orginally set up it was a single day event but due to popularity new races were introduced and since 2007 the Breeders Cup races have been run over two days.
The event is an end of year championship which attracts plenty of interest from European runners as well as the obvious interest in the US itself. With the addition of the two days the event now awards over $25 million in prize money.
Breeders Cup jockey Jerry Bailey has ridden the most ever winners with fifteen and D. Wayne Lukas is the top Breeders Cup trainer with eighteen wins at the Breeders Cup. The leading owner in terms of prize money won is Allen Paulson who has earned an astonishing $8,730,000 from his horses performances.
In 2002 their was a betting scandal where three friends conspired to manipulate bets enabling a $3 million payout. The conspirators were found out however after a 43/1 outsider exposed them as the only winner of the jackpot and suspicions arose.
History will be made in 2009 as Santa Anita Park hosts the Cup for the second successive year, which is a first. The 2009 renewal will take Santa Anita up to five time hosts, one behind Churchill Downs who hold the record at six. Churchill Downs has already been announced as the 2010 location for the Breeders Cup. The good thing about the event being hosted at the same racetrack as last year is that you should be able to get more Breeders Cup form than you could have in previous years.
