2009 Breeders Cup Mile Runners

Zacinto The Breeders Cup Mile is one of the most hotly contested races for European runners in the Breeders Cup World Championship. Run on the turf the race has seen previous European trained winners such as Six Pefections, Domedriver and last years victor Goldikova. French trainer Freddy Head returns to Santa Anita Park in 2009 in a bid to make it two on the trot for his exhuberant mare. She looks fare to head the top of the Breeders Cup Mile betting but faces stiff opposition from the likes of Zacinto, Delegator and the Godolphin owned Gladiatorus.

Court Vision

Four year old aiming to get trainer Richard Dutrow Jr his second win in the race after winning with Kip Deville in 2007. Winner last time in the Shadwell Turf Mile but this race looks a tougher prospect.

Cowboy Cal

Has his supporters and last seen winning here last time out over course and distance in the Grade Tree Mile. Obvious step up in class required but not out of the question. Also entered in the Breeders Cup Dirt Mile.

Ferneley

Formally trained in Ireland for Francis Ennis this five year old was a winner in the Del Mar Handicap at the end of August but found last years Filly and mare Sprint winner Ventura too good for him last time out.

Gladiatorus

One of two Goldolphin owned horses in the race won last time out in a Group 1 in Italy. A hat-trick of wins back at the start of the year in the Dubai World Cup has a decent each-way chance here.

Justenuffhumor

Four out of five wins for this four year old trained by Kiaran McLaughlin who is looking for his second Breeders Cup win. On a five timer before coming a cropper last time out beaten by Court Vision in the Shadwell Turf.

Karelian

Lightly raced seven year old is the oldest horse in the race and beaten a nose last time out by Court Vision in the Shadwell Turf Mile. An each-way squeak at best. Also entered in the Breeders Cup Dirt Mile.

Whatsthescript

Outsider whose last win came well over a year ago. Three third places in a row in the lead up to this including when a beaten favourite in the American Handicap in July. Too much to do here.

Courageous Cat

Another outsider with little form at this level and will probably struggle. Placed third in the Jamaica Handicap last time out.

Delegator

An English Derby fancy at the beginning of the season before derailing in the Irish 2,000 Guineas for former trainer Brian Meehan. Now with Godolphin a win in the Celeberation Mile has made the three year old one of the main dangers to the favourite here.

Goldikova

Last years winner is a short priced favourite to repeat this feat again in 2009. Superb turn of foot but quirky to say the least, needs to have a running day to be sure of your money but all going well should win this.

Zacinto

Another market leader from Europe Sir Michael Stoute's lightly raced three year old has yet to finish out of the top two. 2nd to Rip Van Winkle last time out in the QEII stakes and will be a contender here.

Breeders Cup Mile Latest Betting Odds

Goldikova is a very short priced favourite to win the Breeders Cup Mile and should she reproduce anything like the turn of foot that gave her the win twelve months ago it's very difficult to argue against her chances here in 2009.
