Breeders Cup Trainers
When looking at your Breeders Cup betting it is a good idea to look at past results to see what kind of record specific trainers have in the Breeders Cup races. For example, some of the races are run on the dirt track and European trained horses don't have a great record on that surface. There may also be trainers that specialise in training juveniles, or specialise in certain race distances.
Below is a summary of each Breeders Cup race and how trainers have performed. American D. Wayne Lukas is the most successful trainer in Breeders Cup history with eighteen winners.
Top Breeders Cup Mile Trainers
There are no particular trainer trends in the Breeders Cup mile to look out for. European trainers have had some success in the race and Aiden O'Brien will probably send several entries across as he searches for his maiden win. Freddy Head has proven to be the most successful trainer in the race with three consecutive victories with Goldikova from 2008 to 2010.
Top Breeders Cup Turf Trainers
The Breeders Cup Turf has an excellent record for European trained runners with Sir Michael Stoute having won the race four times, most recently with Conduit in 2009. Aidan O'Brien has trained three winners in the past, while Brian Meehan, Andre Fabre and Saeed Bin Suroor have each had two winners in the race.
Top Breeders Cup Classic Trainers
English trainer John Gosden won this race with Raven's Pass in 2008. Raven's Pass was only the second European trained horse to win the Breeders Cup Classic, the other being Andre Fabre with Arcangues in 1993. Run on dirt the race has been dominated by the Americans but there looks to be a strong string of European runners making the trip to the USA this year.
Top Breeders Cup Juvenile Trainers
Bob Baffert trained Midshipman to victory in 2008 which was the American's second success in the race. Aiden O'Brien, Francois Boutin and Jeremy Noseda all have wins in this race but D. Wayne Lukas reigns supreme in this race with five wins.
Top Breeders Cup Sprint Trainers
American Trainer Bob Baffert has three wins to his name in the Breeders Cup Sprint, including wins in both 2007 and 2008. That makes Baffert the most successful trainer in the race's history. The Sprint hasn't been kind to European trained runners with no winners to date in the race.
Top Breeders Cup Juvenile Fillies Trainers
The Breeders Cup Juvenile Fillies run on dirt is another race that has had no European trained winners to date. The surface and lack of runners sent across for the pond has ensured that this race has been dominated by the Americans, with D. Wayne Lukas having saddled five winners.
Top Breeders Cup Filly and Mare Turf Trainers
The European trained horses have had more success in the Breeders Cup Filly and Mare Turf with five winners out of the thirteen runnings under this name. Ed Dunlop has won the race with the talented former Oaks winner Ouija Board. American Robert Frankel is the only multiple winner of the race with two wins in 2002 and 2005.
Top Breeders Cup Ladies Classic Trainers
The Breeders Cup Ladies Classic is another race dominated by US trainers with no European winners to date. D. Wayne Lukas has four wins to his name in this race, as does William Mott, who won in 2010 and 2011 with Unrivalled Belle and Royal Delta respectively, while C.R. McGaughey III, Neil Drysdale and Ron McInally are the only other multiple winners.
The remaining six Breeders Cup races have only been run over the last few years so there's not much to go on in the way of form. John Gosden saddled winner Donativum to victory in the 2008 Breeders Cup Juvenile Turf and that looks to be the pick of the races to follow if you're backing a European trained horse.
